Winter Bison

Seemingly not bothered....

Prowling Polar Bear

Polar Bear at Play

It was a relief to see him enjoying the snow. Imagine a polar bear that preferred sunny days in Ibiza. I guess he looks "cute" in these snaps too but a trip inside the enclosure would no doubt be terrifying.

Polar Bear

An interesting thought experiment which uses a polar bear exists.
Try actively not thinking of a polar bear and see how long your manage before the blasted creature appears in your minds eye. Having played not thinking of a polar bear for too long it was time to see one. This one was at Buffalo Zoo.

Frozen Trees in Black & White

Black and white goes some way to showing how cold it was. The ever present spray from the falls congealed on spectacles. Hand related, glove off, faffing while taking shots was reduced to a minimum.

Lake Erie Frozen Shoreline

Flotsam is locked in the frozen beach.

Frozen Trees

Details of trees overlooking Lake Erie.

Shove Ice Mountains

Some of the Lake Erie shove ice can get quite tall. Note the folk included for scale.

Lake Erie Shove Ice

A local chap explained that the ice is "shove" ice created as it is pushed into the shoreline.
The lump on the right is the size of a large car.
The landscape was also odd to walk over. The ice is simultaneously slippy and sharp with  the occasional hole covered with powdered snow. Crossing the artic or antarctic on similar terrain at -20C must be hard work.

Frozen Lake Erie View

Air temperature was around -7C.
The shimmer in the trees is due to ice encasing the branches.
